Fine Gael candidate for the Longford-Westmeath bye-election, Cllr Gabriel McFadden, has said the creation of 100 new jobs from the €4m Athlone-Mullingar greenway project confirms this Government’s commitment to regional job creation.
“The €4m in Government funding, formally announced today, to develop the Athlone-Mullingar cycleway/walkway is expected to create 100 jobs, half of that number through the construction phase.
“Developing this cycle route will be of major benefit to economies in Athlone and Mullingar and in areas in between this 40km route.
“This Government has given a clear commitment to job creation in the midlands and I am delighted that this greenway will create real jobs for local communities in this region.
“It would also like to thank Westmeath County Council and all the stakeholders in this project for accelerating the initial plans for this fantastic development.”
